book recs

i'm nearing the end of the namesake by jhumpa lahiri, which means another good book is required for my near future. i didn't expect to enjoy the story as much as i did. everyone i know who read it also read the interpreter of maladies, and relished it so much that the namesake remained in the shadows of her first effort. i've enjoyed it quite a bit.

we're travelling to nebraska on friday, which means a good book in which to lose myself is a requirement, due this thursday.

please suggest!

I just read a new novel. "When We Get There" by Shauna Seliy. I absolutely LOVED it. It's being marketed as a "coming of age" type novel, but it is so much more than that. It's complex, delicate, explores how one's identity and sense of community is developed. Plus a just plain interesting plot. It grabs you from the first sentence. Have a good trip!!!

man, i loved the namesake. it is so full of tenderness and subtlety! and i was amazed that the film captured that, too (i thought).

are you looking for new book recommendations, or anything at all? have you read the god of small things by arundhati roy? or brick lane by monica ali? both good ones featuring modern india.

do you have recommendations for me? i'm building my summer reading list and would appreciate input. :)

I recommend either of Ruth Reischl's books. Comfort me with Apples or Tender to the Bone are both excellent. Sapphires &
Garlic was ok. I think her books have come with me on long plane trips to Nebraska. Maybe you should read some Willa Cather?

Trip time! I haven't read nearly enough, but some books that always stand out are: Homo Zapiens by Victor Pelevin and Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo. I'm also currenlty working on Tipping the Velvet but it hasn't snagged me yet.

Hiya swash.
I too am reading The Namesake (and am devouring it in your home state this weekend!).
My suggestion is 'What is the What' by Dave Eggers. I loved it and bawled my head off.
I hope you're well...

how EXCELLENT to receive so many recs! thanks to all. my library queue is full of good ideas.

jen c: thanks for the rec--i've never read Shauna Seliy, and look forward to checking her out.

marjorie: i'm always reading, and have no predilection toward new or old books, just goodies. i'll start compiling some recommendations for you and others soon.

amy: thanks as always for recommending books that fit my mood. i brought comfort me with apples. more on that, later.

greg: ahhh, delillo. always meant to read him. i'll get on it!

cara: i'm guessing you're in the northlands, huh? hope you're enjoying yourself, and thanks for the eggers rec. i read his first, and wondered if i'd like this one too. always good to have a bawler in the queue :) miss you, cara.
